You measured the deck, chose the bar table, and lined up four stools that looked right in the photo. Then everyone sits down and their knees hit the frame. Getting bar stool height right is the difference between a bar setting people linger at and one they end up standing beside. It comes down to a single number, and it is not the one printed on the box.
This guide starts at the seat and works up to the table, which is the opposite of how most people shop. We cover the two seat heights that do most of the work outdoors, a pairing table you can measure against, and what changes when a setting goes into a cafe rather than a backyard. Bar stool height is really about the clearance gap
Seat height on its own tells you nothing. A 75 cm stool is perfect under one table and unusable under another. What matters is the clearance gap: the space left for your thighs between the top of the seat and the underside of the table.
Aim for 25 to 30 cm. Under 20 cm you are wedged in, knees against the frame, with no way to cross your legs. Over 35 cm and you are reaching up to your plate.
Two details catch people out. Measure to the underside of the top rather than the surface, because a thick tile top or an apron rail can swallow 5 cm without you noticing. And measure the seat at its firmest point, since a cushion compresses and a cushioned stool sits lower in use than in the photograph.
65 cm or 75 cm? The two seat heights that cover most outdoor tables
Outdoor stools cluster around two seat heights, and the difference between them is not a styling choice. It is a different table underneath.
Seventy-five centimetres is true bar height. It is what you want under the 100 cm to 103 cm bar tables that make up most of the outdoor bar range. The Paris Bar Stool ($145) is a straightforward example: a 75 cm seat, 42 cm wide, in UV-treated synthetic wicker on an aluminium frame, built to commercial quality with a 150 kg weight rating.
Sixty-five centimetres is counter height, not bar height. It suits an outdoor kitchen bench or a lower high-dining table. The Sams Stool ($245) comes in exactly this height, at 65 cm with a 30 cm diameter seat top in recycled Indonesian hardwood, with a 45 cm version for lower work.

The bottom two rows are where most regret lives. A 65 cm stool under a 100 cm bar table looks close enough in a showroom and feels wrong the moment you sit down.
When the table is not actually a bar table
Plenty of outdoor tables sit between dining height and bar height, and they need a stool no bar stool chart will give you. The Callala High Dining Tables ($588) are a good case: 153 cm long, 76 cm wide and 84 cm high, on a powder-coated aluminium frame with a glass top. High dining height means you can see over a balcony rail while you eat, which is the whole point of it on an apartment balcony.
At 84 cm, a 75 cm stool leaves only 9 cm and a 65 cm stool leaves 19 cm. The tall size of the Rustic Teak Stools ($225) is 60 cm, which lands the gap at a comfortable 24 cm. Those stools come in three sizes at 20 cm, 45 cm and 60 cm, each cut from recycled Indonesian teak, so no two are identical.

Pull it up to a bar table and you sit more than half a metre below the surface. Low stools are furniture, not dining seats.
Commercial venues and Australian backyards ask different things
In a venue, seat height is only half the brief. Stools take hundreds of sittings a season, so weight ratings and materials matter, and stackability decides how fast a footpath area clears at close. A 150 kg rating and a commercial-quality build separate a stool that survives a summer of trade from one that does not. Footpath dining rules vary by council across Australia, and many permits set conditions on how furniture is stored and secured outside trading hours. Check with your local council before you order, because the answer in Fremantle is not the answer in Newcastle.
At home the pressures are different. Exposed decks in Adelaide and coastal spots along the New South Wales north coast punish light stools. A moulded stool that blows over in a southerly is a poor pick, however good its seat height. Salt air favours powder-coated aluminium and synthetic wicker over untreated steel, and on a strata rooftop or body corporate pool deck the scheme by-laws often limit what can stay out overnight.
