Ordering lockers comes down to four questions: how many doors per column, how wide, which lock and what goes on top. Get them wrong and staff end up folding coats into short compartments or hunting for spare keys. Steel lockers suit staff rooms, schools, gyms and workshops, and the right mix of tiers, step doors and locks makes a bank easy to live with.

This guide works through each choice using lockers from our steel lockers range, with sizes and locks taken from the product pages.

Steel lockers by tiers: from one door to six

A tier is one door in a single column. One tier gives a full-height compartment for coats and uniforms. Four or six tiers fit more people into the same wall space, with shorter compartments for a bag, phone and lunch.

The GO Steel Locker Single Door (from $235) is a one-tier staff locker with a hat shelf and coat rail inside. The body is fully riveted, and every door has full length stiffeners and a name holder. Choose 305mm wide in white or silver grey, or 380mm wide in silver grey, both 455mm deep and 1830mm high.

At the other end, the Steelco 6 Door Locker (from $410) stacks six compartments in a 305mm or 380mm wide column, 460mm deep and 1830mm high. Every door has ventilation holes and a card holder, and the flush mounted doors open 180 degrees. It arrives pre-assembled with a 10 year product warranty.

Step lockers, phone lockers and mail slot lockers

Step lockers, also called Z lockers, give two people full hanging space in the footprint of one locker.

The GO Steel Step Locker (from $317) has a coat rail in each compartment and measures 380mm wide, 455mm deep and 1830mm high. It comes fully assembled. Lock options are a cam lock with 2 keys, a butterfly lock for a padlock or a digital keypad.

Where schools or workplaces ask people to put phones away, a phone locker keeps them secure and easy to collect. The Steelco 30 Door Phone & Keys Locker ($1,874) has compartments designed for all types of smartphones, and they also suit keys, medications and jewellery. It is 940mm high, 900mm wide and 225mm deep, and weighs 48kg. It comes with a pad latch hasp or keylock, and GPO outlets and USB ports for charging can be added separately.

Mail slot lockers let post and documents be dropped in without opening the door, which suits offices with shared desks. The Steelco Slim Edge 6 Door Mail Slot Steel Locker with Combo Lock ($614) has a mail slot on each door and combination locks as standard. At 1200mm high, 900mm wide and 400mm deep, it is designed to sit within a workstation setup, and it arrives pre-assembled.

Widths, depths, banks and sloping tops

The full-height lockers in this guide are 1830mm high, with columns 305mm or 380mm wide and 455mm to 460mm deep. Lockers are usually ordered in banks, so measure the wall and work out how many columns fit. Three 305mm GO lockers, for example, make a 915mm bank.

GO lockers can be banked in lots of 2 or 3, and the Steelco 6 Door Locker can stand alone or bank together as a bay. Leave clear floor space in front so doors can swing fully open without blocking a walkway. The table compares the six lockers in this guide.

Locker Doors Size (W x D x H) Locks listed
GO Steel Locker Single Door 1 305 or 380 x 455 x 1830mm Cam lock, butterfly lock or digital keypad
GO Steel Step Locker 2, stepped 380 x 455 x 1830mm Cam lock, butterfly lock or digital keypad
Steelco 6 Door Locker 6 305 or 380 x 460 x 1830mm Keylock or padlatch, digital optional
Steelco Heavy Duty School Lockers Double Bank 6, in two columns of 3 760 x 580 x 1830mm Padlatch as standard
Steelco Slim Edge 6 Door Mail Slot Steel Locker 6 900 x 400 x 1200mm Combination lock as standard
Steelco 30 Door Phone & Keys Locker 30 900 x 225 x 940mm Pad latch hasp or keylock

A sloping top stops a bank becoming a shelf. The GO Steel Locker Sloping Top (from $103) has a 30 degree slope that prevents dust building up and discourages people from leaving items on top, which matters in food areas. It comes 300mm wide for a single locker or 915mm wide for a bank of 3.

Stands and plinths lift a bank off the floor, and like bench seats they are sold separately. Find them alongside sloping tops and spare locks in our locks and locker accessories range.

Locks and ventilation

The lock decides who controls access, so match it to how each locker will be used.

  • Key or cam lock. Simple for assigned lockers. The GO cam lock comes with 2 keys, so decide early who holds the spares.
  • Padlock fitting. A butterfly lock, padlatch or pad latch hasp takes the user's own padlock. On GO lockers the padlock is not included.
  • Combination. The Slim Edge mail slot locker has a combination lock as standard, so there are no keys to lose.
  • Digital. GO lockers offer a digital keypad with private or public lock programming, batteries not included. The Steelco 6 Door Locker lists a digital locking system as an optional extra.

Private programming suits a locker assigned to one person, who keeps the same code. Public programming suits shared lockers, where each user sets a code when locking and the code clears when they open it again. Our guide to locker locks and accessories compares padlocks, combination and digital locks.

Airflow matters too, especially in Australian summers when towels and gym gear go into lockers damp. The Steelco 6 Door Locker and the heavy duty school lockers both have ventilation holes on every door.

Steel, plastic or laminate in Australian schools, gyms and offices

Steel is the everyday choice for dry staff rooms, schools and workshops, and it banks into long runs. Where lockers stay wet, such as pool change rooms, plastic lockers are the better fit because they cannot rust. Laminate lockers suit reception areas and fit-outs where lockers sit in view.

Schools are hard on lockers. The Steelco Heavy Duty School Lockers Double Bank ($1,109) joins two 3-door columns in solid steel with double-skinned doors. Ventilation holes on each door provide airflow and minimise odours, and a padlatch comes as standard so students can fit their own padlocks. It is 760mm wide, 580mm deep and 1830mm high.

Schools often fit new lockers over the summer holidays, before Term 1 begins. In end-of-trip facilities, one-tier or step lockers let cyclists and runners hang work clothes for the day.

Every product in this guide lists delivery to metro Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. Goods arrive flat-packed unless the product page says assembled, and the Steelco lockers here arrive pre-assembled. Delivery is to the ground-floor entrance, so check doorways, lifts and corridors before full-height lockers arrive.

Steel lockers — frequently asked questions

What size are steel lockers?

Full-height steel lockers in this guide are 1830mm high, 305mm or 380mm wide and 455mm to 460mm deep. The heavy duty school lockers are 580mm deep, and the mail slot locker is a lower 1200mm unit.

What is a step locker?

A step locker splits one column into two L-shaped compartments with stepped doors. Each user still gets full hanging space, so two people share one locker footprint.

Do steel lockers come with padlocks?

Not on the GO lockers, where the butterfly lock option does not include a padlock. Budget for one padlock per door, or choose the cam lock option, which comes with 2 keys.
