Standing Desk Wobble: Why Desks Shake at Full Height and What Helps

The Neat Furniture Team |

A desk that feels solid when you sit can start to sway once it rises to standing height. Type firmly and the screen nods; lean on the front edge and the top shifts. Some standing desk wobble is normal at full extension, but a lot of it has a cause you can find and fix, and the right frame helps from the start.

This guide explains why desks shake at height and how to choose and set up a steadier one, using the stated specs of six desks and frames from our standing desks range.

What causes standing desk wobble at full height

Each leg of a sit-stand desk is a set of steel tubes that slide inside each other. Every join needs a small clearance to move, and at full height the tubes overlap least, so that clearance shows up as movement at the top. The higher the desk goes, the more leverage the top has over those joins.

Front-to-back movement depends mainly on the columns and the length of the feet. Side-to-side sway depends more on the frame rail between the legs and how tightly it is bolted. Heavy screens, long monitor arms, an uneven floor and loose bolts add to both.

Column shape matters too. The Montana Electric Standing Straight Workstation (3 Stages) (from $667) uses rectangular 90mm x 60mm leg columns, which its page says give better lateral stability than square-leg frames. Its dual motor, 3-stage frame covers 620mm to 1270mm, excluding the desktop, with a 140kg lifting capacity. It has a 25mm-thick desktop and a 10-Year Comprehensive Warranty covering frame and electronics.

Leg stages, columns and motors

Three-stage legs start lower and reach higher than two-stage legs, but each extra stage adds a join. Not every desk needs the tallest frame. The Agile 2C/1M Electric Straight Workstation (from $1,025) has two columns and a single motor, with a 685-1130mm height range at 22mm/sec. Its frame is 90x60mm rectangle 2mm steel tubing, rated to 160KG, and it carries a 10-Year Warranty.

If everyone using the desk stands comfortably within a shorter range, the legs never need to extend as far.

Motors lift the desk, but they do not stop it swaying; the steel does that. Look at column size and wall thickness wherever a page states them. The AgileMotion+ Rectangle Column Straight Frame ($879) uses 90x60mm rectangle 2mm steel columns, rated to 160KG. Its 3-stage, double or triple motor drive travels at 30mm/sec through a 635-1290mm height range, and it carries a 15-Year warranty.

Our guide to electric standing desks, from motors and stages to desk tops explains these frame terms in more detail.

Frame width, feet and the desk top

A top that overhangs its legs by a long way acts as a lever, so match the frame width to the top. The AgileMotion+ frame adjusts to widths of 1200-2200mm. The Klass Frame Only - Dual Motor 3-Stage Single-sided Desk (from $554) comes in two sizes: one fits desktops W1200-1800mm and the other W1800-2200mm, both D680-800mm. Its dual motor, 3-stage legs suit a top you already own.

The Montana above and the Boost Crank below both state a 25mm top. A thin or soft board can flex between the legs and add bounce, so choose a solid, flat top.

The Arise Plus Electric Height Adjustable Desk Frame Only ($703) fits desktops 1200-2000mm long and 600-800mm wide. It uses two linear actuators rather than a single motor and transfer bar, and an electronic controller reads the load on each leg so the desk rises and falls evenly. Its 3 stage legs reach up to 1230mm, with a 125kg loading, a 38mm/sec lift speed and a ten year warranty.

Load, floors and loose bolts

A weight rating tells you what the frame can lift, not how steady it will feel. Ratings here run from 125kg on the Arise Plus to 160KG on the Agile 2C/1M and the AgileMotion+ frame.

Monitor arms are a common cause of bounce. A clamp on the back edge puts the screen's weight on a long lever, and each keystroke sets it moving. Fit the clamp near a leg rather than mid-span, keep the heaviest items over the frame rather than at the far ends, and set the arm's tension so the screen does not drift.

A desk that rocks on its feet will shake at any height. Check the top with a spirit level and adjust the feet until every glide sits firmly on the floor. The Boost Crank Single Sided Workstation - Without Screen (from $529) has adjustable levelling feet, 90mm x 60mm columns and a 700mm foot size. It cranks from 705mm to 1155mm at up to 15mm per second, on a frame with 3.0mm, 2.0mm and 1.5mm steel used throughout.

Bolts settle once a desk moves every day, so re-tighten the frame and top fixings a few weeks after assembly. Do not overtighten screws into the board, which can strip the thread.

Steadier standing desks in Australian offices and homes

Australian office towers often have carpet tiles over a concrete slab, which gives a firm base once the feet are level. Many older homes have timber floorboards on joists, which can flex underfoot and make a desk bounce. On a springy floor, much of the standing desk wobble comes from the floor, so place the desk near a wall where the floor is firmer.

All six products here list delivery to metro Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide on their Delivery lines. Deliveries go to the ground-floor entrance, and goods arrive flat-packed unless the product page says assembled. Assemble on a flat floor, fit every bolt loosely first, then tighten them evenly so the frame sits square.

Standing desk wobble — frequently asked questions

Is it normal for a standing desk to wobble?

A small amount of movement at full height is normal, because telescoping legs need some clearance to slide. A desk that sways when you type, or rocks on the floor, has a cause worth fixing, such as uneven feet, loose bolts or a heavy monitor arm.

How do you fix a wobbly standing desk?

Start with the floor and the bolts: level the feet, then re-tighten every frame and top fixing. If it still moves, shift monitor arm clamps closer to a leg and keep heavy items over the frame.

Are 3-stage standing desks more stable than 2-stage desks?

Not automatically, because stability depends on the columns, feet, rail and top as much as the number of stages. Three stages give a wider height range, so check that the frame reaches the heights you need without running out of travel.

Do dual motor standing desks wobble less?

Dual motors mainly change how the desk lifts, not how stiff it is at height. On the Arise Plus, for example, a controller reads the load on each leg so the top rises and falls evenly.
