The new meeting room is painted, the table is in, and someone asks how big the whiteboard should be. Guess too small and people cram notes into a corner; guess too big and the board fights the door and the light switch. Choosing between whiteboard sizes comes down to the wall, the room and who will write on it.
This guide covers the sizes stocked on our boards, matching a board to the room, mounting height, mobile and glass options, and when two boards beat one. Most of the boards below are in our magnetic whiteboards range.
Common whiteboard sizes and the rooms they suit
The Standard Whiteboard - Magnetic (from $55) comes in 12 sizes, from 600 x 450mm up to 3000 x 1200mm. It suits light to medium use in offices and meeting rooms, mounts landscape or portrait, and its surface is guaranteed for 8 years.
For heavy daily use, the Porcelain Whiteboard - Magnetic (from $125) also comes in 12 sizes, from 900 x 600mm to 3600 x 1200mm. Its vitreous enamel surface is built for constant use in schools, higher education, conference centres and medical clinics, with a 25-year guarantee.
As a starting point for each room:
- Single office, reception or home office: 600 x 450mm or 900 x 600mm for notes and lists.
- Small meeting room for four to six people: 1200 x 900mm or 1500 x 900mm.
- Larger meeting room or boardroom: 1800 x 1200mm or 2400 x 1200mm.
- Classroom or training room: 2400 x 1200mm to 3600 x 1200mm across the front wall.
Matching the board to the wall and the room
Measure the clear wall first, then subtract doors, light switches, power points, windows and columns. Leave room at one end for the presenter to stand beside the board without blocking it. Narrow walls between windows or beside a door often suit a portrait board, which the Standard Whiteboard allows.
Mounting height is about reach and sightlines. Set the bottom edge a little above desk height so the pen tray clears desks and chairs, and keep the top edge within easy reach of the shortest regular user. In primary classrooms, mount boards lower so children can reach the middle.
Rooms built around a projector need extra height. The LX8 EDGE MAX EverWrite Porcelain Whiteboard (from $2,010) is 1500mm tall, in four stocked sizes from 2000 x 1500mm to 3600 x 1500mm. Its matte porcelain surface minimises glare for projection and writing, and carries a 25-year guarantee.

Mobile and double-sided boards
A mobile board moves between rooms, and a second face doubles the writing space. The Standard Mobile Whiteboard (from $323) has a pivoting double-sided frame with a lacquered steel magnetic surface, in five sizes from 1200 x 900mm to 1800 x 1200mm. Locking castors hold it steady while you write, and it carries an 8-year warranty.
For agile teams, the ALPHA AD1 Double Sided Mobile Porcelain Magnetic Whiteboard ($1,350) stands 1800mm high and 900mm wide. Its A-shaped frame is more stable than a traditional mobile board and folds flat to store. Both sides are magnetic, scratch resistant porcelain, with a conditional 25 year warranty on the writing surface.

A tall, narrow board like this suits stand-up sessions where people gather around it. Our mobile whiteboards and flipcharts include more sizes.
Glass board sizes
The largest glass board in this guide is 2400 x 1200mm, against 3600 x 1200mm for porcelain. The Glassboard - Magnetic White (from $208) comes in eight sizes from 900 x 600mm to 2400 x 1200mm, in 4.5mm toughened low-iron safety glass. Its fixtures float the board 20mm off the wall, and it includes a clear acrylic pen tray and 5 super strong glassboard magnets.
For a feature wall, the Lumiere ARC Magnetic Glassboard (from $498) has smooth curved lines and soft rounded edges, in 1200 x 1000mm or 1800 x 1200mm. It has no visible fixings and a 25 Year Warranty. Both glass boards need super strong or glass board compatible magnets.

If you are still weighing glass against magnetic or mobile boards, our guide to choosing a magnetic, glass or mobile whiteboard compares them. Here is how the seven boards compare.

When two boards beat one large board
One long board suits a single presenter who needs a continuous surface. Two boards often work better:
- They are easier to move. A 3600 x 1200mm board needs a clear run through doors, corridors and lifts, while two 1800 x 1200mm boards travel separately.
- One board can hold a standing plan while the other is wiped after every meeting.
- Boards on two walls let two groups work at once.
- A mobile second board can follow the meeting to another room.
The Porcelain Whiteboard offers both routes, with 1800 x 1200mm and 3600 x 1200mm among its sizes. The LX8 EDGE MAX is made for the joined approach, as its boards join seamlessly horizontally or vertically for modular installations.
Whiteboards in Australian classrooms, training rooms and offices
In classrooms and training rooms, from primary schools to TAFE campuses, the front wall usually carries the widest board it fits. A mobile board then covers group work. Offices more often need several mid-sized boards spread across meeting rooms.
Internal office walls are often plasterboard. The Standard Whiteboard comes with 4 plastic wall mates and 4 screws for plasterboard fixing, but larger and heavier boards are best fixed into studs or masonry.
Deliveries go to the ground-floor entrance, so measure the lift, stairwell and corridor turns before ordering a 3000mm or 3600mm board for an upper floor. All seven boards here list delivery to metro Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide on their product pages.
Whiteboard sizes — frequently asked questions
What are the standard whiteboard sizes?
Wall whiteboards usually come in metric sizes from 600 x 450mm up to 2400 x 1200mm or larger. The Standard Whiteboard - Magnetic runs from 600 x 450mm to 3000 x 1200mm in 12 sizes, and the porcelain version reaches 3600 x 1200mm.
What size whiteboard do I need for a meeting room?
A meeting room for four to six people usually works well with a 1200 x 900mm or 1500 x 900mm board. Larger meeting rooms and boardrooms suit 1800 x 1200mm or 2400 x 1200mm, or a 1500mm-tall board if you also project onto it.
How high should a whiteboard be mounted?
Mount it so the bottom edge sits a little above desk height and the top edge stays within easy reach of the shortest regular user. In primary classrooms, mount it lower so children can reach the middle of the board.
What size is a mobile whiteboard?
Mobile boards here range from 1200 x 900mm to 1800 x 1200mm on the Standard Mobile Whiteboard, which writes on both sides. The ALPHA AD1 is a double-sided A-frame board, 1800mm high and 900mm wide.
