The quote for the new office is finally on your desk, and the procurement checklist from head office has a line you did not expect: environmental certification. The product sheets in front of you are covered in letters. GECA, FSC, E0, GREENGUARD Gold, AFRDI Level 6. Some sound official, some sound like marketing, and none of them explain what they actually promise. Sustainable office furniture is easy to claim and harder to check, so it pays to know what each label covers before the order goes in.

This guide explains the labels you will meet on office chairs, desks and acoustic panels, shows which products in the range carry them, and covers the practical side: buying pieces that last.

GECA and FSC: the two labels you will see most

GECA stands for Good Environmental Choice Australia. It is an independent ecolabel whose standards follow ISO 14024, the international standard for third-party ecolabels. A GECA-certified product is assessed across its whole life cycle, against criteria for environmental impact, human health and social responsibility, including fair working conditions.

FSC is the Forest Stewardship Council. Its label means the timber or wood-based material in a product comes from FSC-certified forests, recycled or reclaimed material, or controlled sources. Chain of custody certification tracks that material through the businesses that process and label it, so the claim can be traced back to the forest.

The Team Air 3 Lever Task Chair 135kg (from $395) lists both GECA and FSC under environmental certification. It is Australian made, carries AFRDI Level 6 for strength and durability, and has a 15 year warranty. Its 3 lever heavy duty mechanism adjusts seat height, seat tilt and back tilt, and the padded lumbar support is height adjustable.

Desks carry the label too. The Axis Straight Desk (from $261) is GECA certified and backed by a 10 year warranty. It comes in 10 worktop sizes, from 1200mm x 600mm up to 2100mm x 900mm, in studio white or new oak on a black or white frame.

E0 boards, GREENGUARD and AFRDI Green Tick

New furniture can release chemicals into the air, and an air-conditioned office with closed windows has less fresh air to dilute them. Two labels deal with emissions directly; the third rates the furniture as a whole.

E0 and E1 are formaldehyde emission classes for particleboard and MDF under the AS/NZS 1859 standards, and E0 is the lower-emission grade. Many desk tops are melamine over a board core, so the board grade matters. The Axis Straight Desk uses a 25 mm E0 grade substrate with a matching 2 mm ABS edge.

GREENGUARD certification, run by UL, tests products for chemical emissions, mainly volatile organic compounds (VOCs). GREENGUARD Gold sets lower VOC limits and is aimed at sensitive settings such as schools and healthcare facilities.

AFRDI Green Tick is run by Furntech-AFRDI, an independent not-for-profit technical organisation for the furniture industry. Products are assessed against its AFRDI 150 sustainability standard, which is points based and has mandatory requirements every product must meet. There are three levels: Level C (Silver), Level B (Gold) and Level A (Platinum).

The Konfurb Luna Mesh Office Chair ($664) holds both AFRDI Green Tick Level B Gold and GREENGUARD Gold. It is endorsed by the Australian Physiotherapy Association, rated to 135kg for 8 seated hours a day, and has a 10 year guarantee.

Recycled PET acoustic panels

Recycled PET is polyester fibre made partly from recycled plastic. Pressed into felt-like panels, it absorbs sound, which is why it is such a common material for acoustic wall panels in open-plan offices. The thing to look for is a stated recycled percentage, not just the word "recycled".

The SANA Acoustic Panel (from $311) is made from 60% recycled PET fibre and is described as non toxic, low VOC and fully recyclable. It is fire rated to Group 1 under AS 5637.1:2015 for wall and ceiling lining. Each panel is 2800 x 1225 mm, in 12mm or 24mm thickness, and the surface is pinnable.

There are more than 20 colours, including Olive, Pistachio, Ash and Slate, so the panels can calm a room visually as well as acoustically. SANA panels are made to order in 10 to 15 working days, which is worth building into a fit-out timeline.

Sustainable office furniture labels at a glance

Use this table to match a label to what it actually tells you. A label only applies to a product when its own page states it.

Label What it covers Example in the range
GECA Independent life cycle ecolabel: environment, human health and social responsibility Axis Straight Desk, Team Air 3 Lever
FSC Wood from certified forests, recycled material or controlled sources, traced by chain of custody Team Air 3 Lever
E0 board Low formaldehyde emission grade for particleboard and MDF Axis Straight Desk
GREENGUARD Gold Low chemical and VOC emissions, with stricter VOC limits than standard GREENGUARD Konfurb Luna
AFRDI Green Tick Furniture sustainability certification against AFRDI 150, at Silver, Gold or Platinum Konfurb Luna (Level B Gold)
Recycled PET Polyester fibre with a stated recycled content SANA Acoustic Panel (60%)

Note what is missing. AFRDI Level 6 and AFRDI 142 rated loads are strength and durability ratings, not environmental ones. They still matter, because a chair built to a high strength rating stays in service, and out of landfill, for longer.

Buy fewer, better pieces

The most sustainable chair is usually the one you do not have to replace. A long warranty is the clearest signal a maker expects a product to last. The Team Air carries 15 years, while the Axis desk and the Luna each carry 10.

Replaceable parts stretch that life further. Castors, bases, arms and seat covers wear long before a steel frame does. The Chrome 5 Star Base With Back Castors ($81) is sold as a replacement chair base, 650mm in diameter, with a 3 year warranty. Measure your existing base before swapping.

Upholstery is often the first thing to look tired. Our guide to choosing office chair upholstery compares mesh, fabric, vinyl and leather.

  • Choose neutral finishes that will suit the next fit-out as well as this one.
  • Pick desks with levelling feet. The Axis has 80 mm of height adjustment in each foot, so it can sit level on an uneven floor after a move.
  • Repair before you replace: a new base, set of arms or castors keeps a sound chair in service.

Green Star, tenders and June: the Australian angle

Some Australian commercial fit-outs aim for a Green Star rating, the Green Building Council of Australia's rating system. The council has recognised the 2012 edition of AFRDI 150, the standard behind Green Tick, which is one reason commercial buyers ask for it. Tenders and procurement checklists can include an environmental line as well.

Timing matters too. World Environment Day falls on 5 June, and June also closes the Australian financial year, when furniture budgets are often being settled. A sustainability checklist is far easier to apply before the purchase order goes out than after the delivery arrives.

Sustainable office furniture — frequently asked questions

What does GECA certified mean on office furniture?

It means the product has been independently assessed against Good Environmental Choice Australia standards covering its whole life cycle. Those standards include environmental impact, human health and social responsibility criteria.

Is E0 or E1 better for office desks?

E0 is the lower formaldehyde emission grade, so it is the better choice for indoor air. The grade applies to the particleboard or MDF core under the melamine surface.

What is the difference between GREENGUARD and GREENGUARD Gold?

GREENGUARD Gold sets lower VOC emission limits than standard GREENGUARD. It is designed for sensitive settings such as schools and healthcare facilities.

Are recycled PET acoustic panels fire rated?

Some are, and the rating should be stated on the product page. The SANA Acoustic Panel is fire rated to Group 1 under AS 5637.1:2015 for wall and ceiling lining.
