Chair Trolleys and Stacking Chair Storage for Halls and Training Rooms

The Neat Furniture Team |

After a training day, a school assembly or a Sunday service, someone has to stack every chair and find somewhere to put it. Carrying chairs two at a time is slow, and stacks left in corridors get in everyone's way. A chair trolley turns a long pack-down into a few trips and keeps stacks tidy between bookings.

This guide covers trolleys made for a specific chair, how many chairs each one carries, castors, storeroom space and moving stacks safely. The trolleys come from our chair accessories and trolleys range, with capacities taken from the product pages.

Why a chair trolley should match your chairs

Most chair trolleys are built around one chair range. The frame is designed for that chair, and the capacity on the product page applies to that chair only, so check which chairs a trolley suits before you buy.

The table below lists the five trolleys and two chairs in this guide by stated capacity and fit.

Product Type Stated capacity Fits
Aria Hospitality Chair Trolley Trolley Up to 26 chairs Armless Aria chairs
Aria Hospitality Chair Chair 5 high on the floor, 26 on the trolley Aria trolley, armless only

Trolleys made for one chair range

Aria Hospitality Chair Trolley, a black metal frame with a tall angled handle on four castors.

The Aria Hospitality Chair Trolley ($172) is a black metal trolley that holds a maximum of 26 armless chairs from the Aria range. Its page says it rolls smoothly when stacked with chairs, and it has a 4 year warranty.

The chair's own page shows the difference a trolley makes. The Aria Hospitality Chair (from $128) stacks up to 5 high on the floor, or 26 on the optional trolley. It links together for tidy rows, has a 120kg weight limit and is for indoor use only. Chairs with arms or a tablet arm are not stackable, so choose armless chairs if they will live on the trolley.

Focus Trolley, a low open metal frame on lockable castors, made for stacked Focus chairs.

The Buro Mario Chair Stacking Trolley ($212) is designed specifically for Buro Mario chairs, with a recommended safe stacking capacity of up to 15 chairs. The Focus Trolley ($88) fits a maximum of 20 Focus Chairs or Focus Chairs with Arms. It is a metal trolley on lockable wheels, with a 3 year Australian warranty.

Sled base trolleys that take more than one chair

If your chairs have a sled base, a trolley that takes any sled chair gives more flexibility. The Z Trolley ($123) carries a maximum of 30 chairs and works with any sled base chair, including the Zing, Zola, Mesh Stackable Visitor and Wimbledon models. It has a black powder coated frame and a 3 year warranty, and chairs are sold separately.

Zola Chair with a moulded seat and curved back on a chrome sled base.

The Zola Chair ($71) is a stackable sled base chair with a 100kg weight rating and a chrome PVC sled base frame, and its page lists it as compatible with the Z Trolley. It suits visitor, cafe and training room use, with a 430mm seat height and a 3 Year warranty. It is delivered assembled.

Castors, storeroom space and moving stacks safely

Apollo Chair Trolley with a black powdercoated tubular frame and wave-shaped rails on four castors.

Storeroom space is often the real limit. The Apollo Chair Trolley ($189) stacks and moves up to 25 Apollo chairs, and its page gives its size as 733mm wide, 454mm deep and 610mm high. It weighs 10kg, is finished in black powdercoat and has a 5 year warranty. A loaded stack stands much taller than the trolley, so check shelf heights and doorways as well as floor space.

Wheels matter too. The Focus Trolley's lockable wheels hold it still while chairs go on and come off. Measure doorways, lifts and ramps along the route, and leave enough clear floor to wheel each trolley in and out.

Moving stacks safely is mostly common sense. Keep each stack within the number the product page states, lock the wheels while loading, and push loaded trolleys slowly, with extra care on ramps and thresholds. Steer from the trolley frame or handle rather than the top chair, so the stack stays upright. Two people make light work of a tall stack through a narrow door.

Chair storage in Australian halls, schools and churches

Across Australia, school halls, church halls and community centres are often packed down by staff or volunteers at the end of the day. Storerooms are often small, so trolleys that roll straight in save time and floor space. Halls usually store folding tables too, so plan room for both, and our folding and flip-top tables range covers trestles and flip-tops.

For training rooms, our training and school chairs range includes stackable chairs. Our guide to stackable chairs for halls, churches and event venues covers choosing the chairs themselves.

  • Delivery. Each product page has a Delivery line naming its metro cities. The Focus Trolley lists Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth and is not available for delivery in SA. The other six products here list Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.
  • Assembly. The Zola Chair is delivered assembled. Other goods arrive flat-packed unless the product page says assembled, and delivery is to the ground-floor entrance.

Chair trolleys — frequently asked questions

How many chairs fit on a chair trolley?

It depends on the trolley and the chair. The trolleys in this guide carry from 15 to 30 chairs, as stated on each product page.

Can one chair trolley take any stacking chair?

Not usually. Most trolleys are made for one range, such as the Aria or Focus trolleys, while the Z Trolley takes any sled base chair.

How high can stacking chairs be stacked on the floor?

Only as high as the product page states. The Aria Hospitality Chair stacks up to 5 high on the floor but up to 26 on its trolley.

How much storeroom space does a chair trolley need?

Allow for the trolley's footprint plus room to wheel it in and out. The Apollo Chair Trolley measures 733mm wide and 454mm deep.
